Once you decide to go the streaming media route, there are still some other factors you may wish to consider.
Of course, none of these elements are necessary to start streaming your content right away but in the long run, they can certainly improve your overall system.
Here we’ll take a look at how you can augment your Home System to get the very most out of your experience.
Ensure a Solid Internet Connection
We always advise that you have a wired connection to the internet when streaming content. Although our Streaming TV Boxes are capable of connecting to your internet service wirelessly, we strongly recommend using a stable wired connection instead.
Powerline adapter kits are the perfect solution to route a wired internet connection to anyplace in your home.
One device (see image) connects directly to your router and a wall plug, and then reciprocal devices can be plugged in throughout your home creating stable internet access points. The devices use your home’s electrical wiring to carry your internet signal.
It certainly beats running wires through walls and floors!
System Extras – Controlling Your System
Most newer televisions have a feature called CEC. This stands for “Consumer Electronics Control” and what it means is that you can communicate and control attached devices through a HDMI connection.
It is this feature that will allow you to control your media streaming device (which is attached to your television through a HDMI cable) with your television’s native remote control device.
Although this can be handy for quick access and control, it is also a labourious form of input when searching for content. This is why we strongly recommend a wireless USB keyboard. They can be picked up just about anywhere for a low price and are ideal for controlling your system.
System Extras Can Help
Your Streaming TV Box can allow you to literally cancel your current cable/satellite TV service; however, there may still be some programming you wish to enjoy that you cannot get on a streaming device.
Daytime shows, local news, specialty programs and the like can often be difficult to find reliably on a streaming system. (No matter what other box sellers will tell you)
If this type of television programming is important to you, your best options are:
- Maintain your current cable/satellite services in a reduced capacity (see our article “Explore Your Options”) so you can still easily access this content
- Employ a HD antenna to receive OTA (Over The Air) local broadcasting
While you will most likely not be able to access many television stations (compared to cable), remember you are only after the basics.
The balance of television shows/movies/sports can be accessed through your streaming device.
