Saving by Streaming

We made the big switch early in 2015. Squeezed by the ever increasing cable bills, and the constant lack of anything decent to watch, we opted for a change. It wasn’t easy … first I would have to sell it to my wife.

If we just got all of this equipment, and changed this, and cancelled that, we would see savings. “How much is all this gonna cost?” was my wife’s big question. Never wanting to do something “half way”, and previously being a professional estimator, I informed her of the total cost. Her assessment of my facts and figures was expected “we just can’t afford that right now”.

My response caught her off guard … “We can’t afford to save money??”

Additional equipment

We traded in our upper-end cable package (complete with TIVO system hardware), movie channel/HBO option upgrade plus our Netflix subscription in for the following:

  • One HD antenna from Best Buy which was a middle of the road selection cost-wise
(we used existing coaxial cabling which was everywhere in the house plus an aluminum pole from Home Hardware)

  • One 2-channel tuner from HDHomeRun

  • A powerline adapter kit (turns your house’s electrical wires into your internet network)

  • A 16 port switch (think of it as a power bar for internet wire connections)

  • Three Raspberry Pi 2 Streaming TV Boxes (formatted by yours truly)

The Result of Our Investment

The result? We receive eighteen channels of live TV, twelve of which are in High Definition.

I should also mention that OTA (Over The Air) HD reception is in 1080i resolution rather than the compressed 720p resolution that you typically get from cable service.

But because we also had a streaming option, we had almost every television show (current and classic), virtually any movie that has been released and all of it in high definition

… plus unlimited music of any genre and a decent selection of sports content.

Lots of Selection
Savings

What are the Savings?

When you tally up what we were paying for high speed internet, upgraded cable and movie channels with HBO, Netflix, rental cable boxes with PVR and all the little extra fees like digital fees, taxes, the occasional rental/PPV etc. …. we were paying about $270.00 a month.

Now we pay under $100.00 a month for very high speed internet service with unlimited data. That’s a total savings of $170.00+ a month. That’s $2,040.00 a year …. every year! With an initial outlay well under $1,000.00, we tamed the beast.
