How we watch TV

Would you believe it’s November already? The warm weather of summer lingered well past its usual time and autumn sort of crept up on us.

Did you notice that the new seasons of TV shows have been released? If not, you still have time to catch up so you can be up to date to chat with your friends about your favourites.

One of my customers told me an interesting “throwback” story about watching the new TV shows.

Here is what she said:

“When I was a teenager, growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, TV was a big deal at my house. Watching TV seemed to be the one thing that my family could all do together and enjoy.

If I wanted to watch my favourite TV shows, I would have to abide by the big networks’ schedule. We only had 1 TV set too, so if Dad or Mom wanted to watch something different, I was out of luck, resigned to watching their choice.

TV shows were also a huge topic of discussion at school! All my friends wanted to talk about the shows they had seen and what went on.

There was no such thing as “spoiler alert” because if you didn’t see the show broadcast live, there was no way to catch up, except by talking to your friends. This was a bigger problem than you might think because sometimes there were 2 shows I liked being broadcast at the same time on different channels.

Keep in mind, this was before the days of on-demand and PVRs, before cable TV and even remote controls. Even changing the channel meant getting up from the couch and physically turning the dial on the TV set.

I remember one glorious year though, that all my favourite shows were broadcast on Thursday nights, on the same channel. We could happily watch for 2 hours straight without having to change the channel and I wasn’t missing any of my favourites.”

You might wonder why I wanted to share this story with you.

Well, for some of you, it will be like a trip down memory lane. For most, it demonstrates just how far we have come in the world of digital entertainment.

We have gone from the problems of broadcast TV with antennas and then cable TV with PVRs to the benefits of today’s modern technology with Streaming TV Boxes.

While broadcast TV had its scheduling challenges, cable TV can often be seen as expensive without the promised convenience.
Streaming TV Boxes, on the other hand, have only benefits.

These benefits can be found in cost savings, variety and convenience.
